Tuesday, November 22, 2005 So a few weeks ago I get an email from Mr. XYZ about an opportunity for Shey and I to work on an ecommerce project. GOOD STUFF! It's a php/mysql/css website using oscommerce as the starting point. The original deadline was 10/31/2005. We respond quickly and wait...and wait. So a few days go by and and so does the deadline. While I'm at the MFAH for my Art History paper last week, I get a call from him to see if we are still available, and indeed we were. I made plans to meet up with him on the weekend and he would get back to me. So again, I wait...and wait. He calls tonight and asks if I'm free and can get to a computer. So I do it. He knows about projects I've worked on and has my resume. He asks if I use AIM or YIM, and of course I do, but I'm not about to mix my social life with work! I ask him to email me and he tells me email is slow, very ineffective, and goes on with this speech about why I should get YIM so he can send me some links. I tell him to email them to me, but he still insists on Instant Messaging me! I ask him what site he wants me to visit and he response was something like..."I want to see if you can read data from this database." WOW! A test? Is he serious? READ DATA FROM A DATABASE? I let him know things between him and I probably won't work out. I was and still am very offended by this. Is it me or was what he did very outrageous and ridiculous? 3 comments Space + Time > DVD? Space My HDD = 179 GB My Music = 26.8 GB 30 minute show = 1.65 GB (1.65 GB) * (70) = 115.5 GB 26.8 GB + 115.5 + (OS/applications/data/etc.) = 173 GB Time 30 minute show = 30 minutes to convert (DVR 2 WMV) (70 shows) * (30 minutes to convert) = 35 hours (at 90%+ CPU usage!!!) The Solution? After this, I'll need to edit out the commercials, then back them up! OMG, I'm just going to BUY the DVDs...or will I? 7 comments JPMC Interview. Wednesday, November 16, 2005 I'm so glad it's all over and done with. It went fairly well and I'm really hoping to hear back from them. First was a 30-minute test, then two 30-minute technical and behavioral interviews. Last was the 30-minute group activity. Test 1) How does JPMC make money? 2) How does IT play in the financial industry? 3) What is the stock of JPMC as of this morning? 4) What are polymorphism, instance, and class in OOP? 5) In the context of a database, what is clustered and non-clustered? Technical Interview -What are the differences between C, C++, and C#? -How does C++ and C# handle/work with passing by reference and by value? -What are some design patterns? -How would you implement the singleton pattern in C#? -What is threading? -What is a semaphore and a mutex? Behavioral -All the normal stuff, nothing new or crazy. 1 comments USAA Day Two. Saturday, November 12, 2005 So day 2 started with at 6:00 AM alarm and a full suit with out a tie. I don't know why, I just didn't feel like wearing a tie that day, so I didn't. Breakfast was served and interviews began: 2 thirty minutes long ones! The managers there are all so freaking nice, it's unbelievable how nice they were and comfortable they made me feel! After interviews we toured the place and David came out to see me. We toured the 1.5 mile long building and they seem to have everything covered except for a hair salon. Here are a few pictures of the adventure back. Too bad I couldn't snap photos inside USAA...
I have moved my decision to not move to San Antonio to a BIG maybe. WHY? It's more like moving to USAA as opposed to moving to San Antonio. The environment and culture of USAA is so awesome. 1 comments USAA Day One. Thursday, November 10, 2005 First night was good. We hit the USAA campus for a tour, the River Walk, and then dinner. You can see as many deer on campus like squirrels on the UH campus! We only did a short tour of the outside of the main building. After dinner, they explained what will go on tomorrow: there's going to be 2 30 minute long interviews with two different managers. After that it's a campus tour of the inside of the main building and buildings G and H. Anyways, here are some pictures (non are of the USAA campus):
Oh Holy T-Shirt. Sunday, November 06, 2005 So a bunch of us went to Slick's last night, and man 4 hours of FUN! Anyways, when we left to take care of the tab, one guy behind the bar asks me, "Hey are you MCSE certififed?" I respond with, "What?" and then "Nah, man it's too expensive!" So he offers me a job! I was so confused, but I guess my "Microsoft .NET" t-shirt gave hiim the impression I knew my shit. AHH...the good feelings, but I hope some of my friends who are looking for jobs will get HOOKED UP! I'm not really a religious person, nor am I close to being a good Catholic, but I'm feeling this passage right about now: MARK 12:41-43. 2 comments Learning XPath. Saturday, November 05, 2005 So I need to parse some XML for my SDP project (C# windows application). I know you can parse XML with the regular .NET Xml class, but I saw XPath. It's bad ass. It navigates through your XML file with ease. Check out the sample: //Load the XML document XmlTextReader("trafficInfo.xml"); XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument(); doc.Load(new XmlTextReader("trafficInfo.xml")); //Create XPathNavigator XPathNavigator xpathNav = doc.CreateNavigator(); //Create XPathIterator string xpathStr = "/items/current/city"; XPathNodeIterator xIterator = xpathNav.Select(xpathStr); MessageBox.Show(xIterator.Current.Value.ToString()); //XML file <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <items> <current> <city>Detroit</city> </current> </items> More Articles on XPath: http://perfectxml.com Article MSDN Library Article P.S. I wish Blogger had tags. It'd make things so much more organized. 0 comments Final Proposal is !(in our favor). Friday, November 04, 2005 It's frustrating working with the department and all of their political bullshit. I'm hoping for a better future, and really hoping there will still be a small community of CS students on the fifth floor. It would be beneficial to the department to have an area for students to hang out, but they don't realize that. The Accreditation Board knows it is, they even asked if we did anything outside academics together. Looking at the currently layout, only 12 students will be able to hang out in the commons area at one time. Our layout will accomodate much more and give the department two dual purpose labs. 1 comments If all else fails, ask the captain. Wednesday, November 02, 2005 Shey and I put together a presentation about our ideas and suggestions about the new lab renovations. Time comes and we begin. Everything goes fine, until 2 seconds into our presentation when we give our ideas. WTF. It's a presentation about what we think, not a presentation about what the department should do, but everything we say is taken into offense and DENIED. But it's ok, we met with the captain, Dr. Garbey, and he heard us out. It was great. I know our idea will be compared to the original plan, and might not even be picked, BUT Dr. Garbey sat, listened, and even gave input about our plan. How awesome is that?! Now I'm hoping our ideas and concerns are addressed in the final plan of the lab renovations. Even though I'm graduating in Decemeber, I'm still hoping for a great future for the Computer Science department (as I may return for a Masters). 3 comments |
