Visual Studio Is Hungry.
Friday, December 30, 2005
So we decided to use VS on a web project. Well, after adding a few pages, controls, and such we apply a *.css. Something cool thing you can do with Visual Studio .NET 2003 is select certain controls and change a common property of those controls, in this case, the CssClass.

I highlight about 10 controls, change the CssClass property and BOOM, my computer goes into an ultimate freeze. CTRL+ALT+DEL lets me see that devenv.exe is taking about 95,544K of memory and about 93%-99% of the CPU resources! It locks up for about 10 minutes!

All it needs to do is all the property tag and value to each control, which is only a text file. Any insight on why VS would consume so much memory to change one property of 10 controls?

(May I remind you that I'm using a Centrino 1.7GHz with 1GB of RAM. The minimum requirements for VS.NET 2003 is way below this.)

And I Thought I Knew HTML...
Saturday, December 17, 2005
Well, according to http://www.w3c.org, I know nothing of the term "HTML". Their validator blew up everything (Shey, thanks for this information). So I put up my home page there to validate...19 errors!

Then again here are some stats about other websites:
Google: 47 errors. (Redirects to co.jp for some reason)
MSN: 0 errors.
Sun: 8 errors.
Cisco: 186 errors.
Ebay: 243 errors.
Microsoft: 0 errors.
Amazon: FAILED.
Adobe: 0 errors.

Does that mean that W3 Consortium is whack? Microsoft and Adobe seem to be on top of their game on the validation.

BTW: Check out this awesome post.

Spyware and Finals.
Saturday, December 10, 2005
Spyware: I hate it. I hate the fact that companies who make anti-spyware also make spyware and force you to buy their software to remedy the problem.

Finals: I hate it. I hate the idea of having one more final, but then again...there is only one left in my undergraduate career.

Time to clean, backup, and reformat the machine for a fresh start of a working life and a new year.

Riddle me this, Riddle me that.
Friday, December 02, 2005
So I'm driving to school and people are calling up 97.9 The Box up for Nelly tickets like CRAZY! He plays some old school Nelly songs and another Paul Wall song. Hatter finally says, ok I'll start the quiz.

Hatter: The first question is really easy, I'm embarassed to even ask it on the air...but here goes. If you put a yellow hat in the red sea, what does it become?
Caller 1: How old are you and whats your name?
Caller 1: My name is xxxx and I'm 22. The answer is RED!
-Silence-
Hatter: NOPE! Click. Next caller, what's your name and age?
Caller 2: I'm xxxx and I'm 29.
Hatter: If you put a yellow hat in the red sea, what does it become?
Caller 2: um....uh....yellow hat in the red sea, right? um... silence...
Hatter: C'mon you're taking up radio time!
Caller 2: uh...er...um ...GREEN!
-Silence-

I could not stop laughing!

Chevron's Hiring Process.
I applied to Chevron about the same time as all the other companies before. They had an info session the night (mid October) before the interview date. It was a very comfortable event and they announced how the interview would be: business causual...no suits, my favorite! Both went very well and I had a very good image of the company. They said we would hear from them very soon, so I was thinking a couple weeks.

A month goes by and I hear nothing...seriously, NOTHING. No email, phone call...nothing. So I think I'm not in. After my second round interviews with other companies and waiting on a final response from them, I receive an email from Chevron's HR (mid November) that they just received my information and is currently under review. A few days later, they call me to see if I'm free December 2, today. I tell them it would be tentative because of my classes and finals were coming around.

As some of you may know I have already accepted a job at another company. I called Chevron this morning to let them know I would not be able to make it because of classes (I have two reviews for finals today!) and they took a really big offense to this. I understand it is a process that took a long, very long time, but I'm still a student. So he hung up on me.

Needless to say, I'm a bit perturbed about how Chevron has handled the candidates for new hires compared to other companies. They are a bit late in the game and very unprofessional, or maybe it was just the recruiter. Either way, he reflects how I view the company and as of now, it's not too good. Maybe I've gone through a unique experience, but I'm still shocked I got hung up on.
